There was a time when reaching a mass audience was only an option for large charities with deep pockets. Times have changed. Today, charities of any size can take advantage of social media tools to showcase their organization to the world. The best advertising always has been, and always will be, word of mouth. Social media managers need to build their social media campaign with one specific goal in mind – to generate discussion.

Brock Designs “Urban Chic”, Serving Up Style 2011

The upcoming Serving Up Style; Designers Fighting Lupus interior design event in Portland, Oregon (#StylePDX) is a perfect fit for social media. The interior design industry was instrumental in the launching of Pinterest and has adopted it like no other industry. The number of interior designers on Facebook and Twitter has exploded in the past few years because social media is the perfect opportunity to showcase design work. Now, as interior designers mobilize their ranks for charitable causes, they can flex their social media muscle to get the word out.

Each year, prominent design teams are invited to create fantastic, stunning, and whimsical dining environments for a four-day showcase during the Portland Fall Home & Garden Show. Serving Up Style culminates with a fundraiser gala, auction, and awards ceremony.

A new report out by CEO.Com suggests that over 70% of the Fortune 500 CEOs have no presence in the social media realm. Of those that do, only 2 CEOs have more than 500 friends on Twitter, and only 9 have tweeted in the past 3 months.

Social media “provides tremendous opportunity for business,” the study said. And these CEOs will need to step into the limelight of social media if they want to see their companies successfully grow.

In the next few years CEOs that communicate with customers through social media will jump to 57 percent, from 16 percent today, said a study by IBM, according to CEO.com

Currently LinkedIn favors many CEOs at 25.9 percent, and Facebook falls in second place at a 7.6 percent presence from CEOs. See the infographic below for details:

“Alas, poor Google+…. I knew him well….”

Using a take on Shakespeare’s Hamlet, about a gravedigger coming across a court jester’s long since dead skull. Methinks it fitting to use Shakespeare’s Yorik as an example, because Hamlet is about power, history, hubris, and greed.

Like Hamlet, Google+ has surrounded and insulated itself with flatterers, blocking out the real world, and not caring if the mainstream embraces it as much as Facebook (enter Claudius) …..

I could go on and on relating Social Media to Shakespeare and comedies of errors….but the point has already been well made by Richard Darell in his Bit Rebels piece last week, and supported by Jim Dougherty of Leaders West in his blog.

And here is the infographic that explains it all in plain infographicspeak:

We met Derek Halpern at the Innotech Business and Technology eMarketing conferences in Portland last month. Derek struck us with his infallible knowledge for social media, as well as his passion for life in general. He’s the kind of guy you’d love to sit with, buy him coffee, and just absorb the technicolor stream of sagacity and know that all is good in the Social Media world. He is a no nonsense East Coast guy with a penchant for candor. By the way, if he read this, he would hate that we used the the words “sagacity” and “penchant for candor” to describe him. This blog post perfectly envelopes his style… quick, easy and to the point.

Below is his opinion on how to write the perfect blog post. We think it’s good, and worth sharing.

Beware, Facebook: Women trust Twitter, Pinterest and Blogs over you.

Trust is the new measure of social success. As the world gets smaller, trust is a key driving force to earning and keeping business online and off.

Twitter was second behind only Pinterest (81 percent) as the most trusted social network for women, and 31 percent said that they had gone on to buy an item recommended to them through the micro-blogging channel.

Overall, however, blogs outperformed all the social networks when it came to influencing purchases – 61 percent of respondents said they had bought an item after a recommendation from a blog, and 41 percent actively use blogs to find information about new products. Why? Blogs command a high level of trust, with four out of five women rating them accordingly.

This infographic from Jumpthru takes a closer look at women, blogs and social media.

Why do you need more engagement on your Facebook Posts?

Well, other than the obvious, more engagement means higher EdgeRank. Higher EdgeRank means more people will see your content.

But how do you get more engagement? Nobody said it’s easy. One thing I can guarantee you right now is that it will not happen overnight. I think we all understand that, a better question will be “how do I start working on getting more engagement now?”

The one thing you can change today is how you post to Facebook, this is how you start working on getting people to engage more with your content:

Test different formats (photo, video, link)

Test different days and times

Test the length of your posts

You get the picture…

Marketing is a testing game, if you are not willing to test you will not find the full potential for your online efforts.

Notice that we’re not discussing if your content is good or not, the reason is that epic content is already expected from you as an expert. If this is not the case, then we need to go back to the canvas. Posting in different formats or at different times will not help.

That said, a good starting point doesn’t hurt, and this nice infographic by Dan Zarrelladefinitely provides a guide to get started on your quest to get more likes, comments and shares on your Facebook posts and hopefully, improve your EdgeRank.

I also want you to participate in the comment section below because I know you have your experiences with this, either good or bad. If you want to ask questions go ahead, if you want to share with the rest of us what’s working for you, that’s cool too.

Pinterest has been the space to play in for visual brands for over a year now. The question is: is it right for YOUR brand? Believe it or not, there are some clients that we steer clear from Pinterest. For example:

*If you don’t want anyone to ever see your product…stay off Pinterest.

*If what you do is in not asthetically pleasing….stay off Pinterest.

*If you want to live under a rock for the rest of your life…stay off Pinterest.

Now, your sanitation engineers, your medical catheter companies, your baby chicken sexers…. you can stay off Pinterest.

What about the rest of you? Here is a great video from our collegues at MDG Advertising put togtether that sums it up nicely:

And while we believe that Pinterest is not the be-all, end-all of the social media scene, we do believe it is the sandbox du jour…. so why not play?
